There is only one week left to the first Breakdown of Sanity gig in Poland, which will tak place in Pod Minogą club in the city of Poznan. We already gave some tickets to two lucky Deathmagnetic.pl readers and now it is time to hear some words about BoS early and current inspirations, why the band keep releasing albums on their own what actually hides behind the phrase „modern metal”. Let’s break some sanity together with Swiss guitarist Oliver 'Oly’ Stingel in before-gig proclamation.
Hell-o it is Mateusz 'Mate’ Sendecki from Deathmagnetic.pl! How is it going Sanity?
Hey! We’re doing pretty good, just preparing for the tour starting this Thursday in Munich, Germany. It’s 2 AM and i feel like there are like 256 things I forgot to pack (laugh). Well, shit…
First of all, how did you like Open Air Gampel, Wacken and Summer Breeze festivals? Have you broke down insanity in the pit?
Yeah it really was a crazy festival summer. We had a blast, and most of them were new stages we never rocked before and yes – sometimes it seemed like the sanity was drowned in the pit!
What made you to find a little time in your busy schedlue and serve us a spicy and tasty metalcore gig here in Poland on a single show in Poznań?
When we planned this tour, our main target was to visit some new countries we never played before – like Poland! So we tried to find a good compromise between a manageable routing and as much new European cities as possible.
Do you plan to go back to Poland? What about USA tours which lot of your overseas fans want to experiance?
Well of course we are open minded, but before we think of any new tours we first want to complete that upcoming tour! But in fact it also depends on the offers we get. Since our trips are expensive and time for touring and playing shows in other countries is short, we have to make sure that the few shows we play are well organized and paid adequate so we can pay our cost and stuff.
You call the genre that you are performing „Modern Metal”. We heard your evolution from more metalcore-like „The Last Sunset” to rather djentic „Perception” that you move in variety of metal subdivisions. What were your modern metal inspirations then and now apart from „everything” on your Facebook profile?
It all started with nu-metal, back in the early 2000s. We used to cover Limp Bizkit songs and our own songs were very nu-metallish, before bands like Parkway Drive crossed our way. As soon as that new wave of metalcore arrived in Switzerland and dominated the „modern metal” in, let’s say 2005 or 2006. There were already so many cool styles we loved to play in our earlier days – before we even knew each other (like punk or thrash) so that we just mixed it with the modern elements and created our own new sound. Well, even if the first releases were not that pinoeering, it showed us the way we had to go.
If we touched the topic of inspirations, do you have any old-school bands from 80’s or 90’s that made you grab the mic and instruments?
Yes of course. I can’t speak for the whole band, but for example, I was a big Offspring fan in the 90’s! I was impressed by the speed and the power of their songs. Of course we all listened to bands like Nirvana or Rage Against the Machine too.
What each of you are recently listening to?
Not really sure about the others, but I listen to Celldweller, Gygax probably to Hans Zimmer, Carlo is fond of Shokram, Tom likes Katy Perry and César listen to some weird jazz stuff (laugh).
Do you have any albums from other bands that you are looking forward to hear ’till the end of this year?
Yeah I’m pretty curious about how „Ire” by Parkway Drive sounds as a whole. The first few songs sounded pretty nu-metallish, so that’s fuckin great!
What your metalcore-fueled band prefer – smoky clubs or muddy open airs?
Club shows! People are closer, energy is higher.
iMac stickers, tattoos, sketches… what was the greatest act of Breakdown of Sanity devotion of your fans you ever experienced?
Well, tattoos are actually a fuckin’ big appreciation, so we applaud on the inside for every single tattoo.
„The Last Sunset”, „Mirrors” as well as the newest record were all produced and mixed by you guys. What made you to chose 'Do It Yourself” way to release all those albums insted of cooperate with one of famous European studio/producer?
You know, music production is one of my biggest hobbies for many years now. From the beginning of my musical carreer I had a clear idea of how my music should sound like. Over the years I tried to increase my knowledge while my vision of „the perfect sound” got even clearer. I couldn’t imagine that somene else is producing our music, no way! And beside of that, we don’t like the idea that other people are earning the same or even more money than the artist itself. Of course, it isn’t all about the money, but you know… it’s just wrong. We always wanted to decide every little detail in our projects without any guidelines or limitations.
Last words belongs to you guys – what do you want to tell your insane Polish fans?
We are really fuckin’ stoked to play our first polish show ever! Curious how a polish moshpit looks like and how polish wodka smells like (laugh).
